Small-cap stocks are badly lagging the S&P 500 â" is that a warning sign?
Small-cap stocks have been lagging the market in recent months. What is sure is that the S&P 500 index (SPX) has been one of the strongest market averages in recent months. Over the same three months, the Russell 2000 index (RUT) (a widely-used benchmark for the small-cap sector) lost 0.8% and the iShares Micro-Cap ETF (IWC) lost 3.4%.

This simple pattern projected the U.S. stock market selloff
Some argue this is a news-driven stock market. While news affects market movements, itâs not as if stock investing is random and unpredictable. The most basic message for anyone aware of this pattern was not to buy as the S&P 500 approached purple trend-line resistance.

GLOBAL MARKETS-Yen, gold gain on trade war angst; Argentine peso sinks
Investors piled into gold, safe-haven yen and bonds on Monday over nagging concerns about a prolonged U.S.-China trade war and global growth, while Argentina's peso plunged 15% after voters handed its president an election mauling. Concerns that a trade deal would not be reached before the 2020 U.S. presidential election grew after Goldman Sachs on Sunday became the latest to cut its U.S. growth outlook and warn a trade stand-off would fester past the election. Stocks in the near term lack a catalyst either from company earnings, the Federal Reserve or a trade deal, said Rahul Shah, chief executive of Ideal Asset Management in New York.

A Steady Diet of Nothing Is Making Equity Investors Irritable
(Bloomberg) -- It has certainly seemed like a busy 18 months for stock traders. There was the bull marketâs near-death experience in December 2018, the VIX blowing up 10 months before that, a smattering of other memorable tumbles, as well as 18 record highs. On the other hand, nothing whatsoever has happened. Never mind that equities had their best yearly start since 1987, or that the index is up 23% since Christmas: 563 days after surging to a high in January 2018, the S&P 500 hasnât made a lick of progress from there. The stretch extended on Monday when a 1.2% tumble in the S&P 500 again pushed it below its Jan. 26, 2018, close of 2,872.87. Most other American indexes have done worse over that stretch, some significantly so. From a high a few weeks earlier, the Dow Jones Transportation Average has fallen 12%, while the Russell 2000 small-cap index has dropped 6.6% from 18 months ago.All this explains the anxiety gripping investors and all the quick trigger fingers lashing the market for the last few weeks, said Mike Wilson, chief U.S. equity strategist for Morgan Stanley. He cites an in-house indicator of market sentiment and positioning thatâs been stuck in neutral for 18 months.âThe trend is consistent with the persistently negative sentiment seen during the bear markets of 2008-2009 and 2015-2016 and helps reinforce our view that we have been in a cyclical bear market since 2018,â he wrote.A lot has changed since January 2018, except for equity prices. The Fed is no longer in a tightening mode, profits that were set to rise 20-plus-percent back then may well fall this year, and recession winds are starting to gust globally. Wilson, one of Wall Streetâs biggest bears, said stocks can fall another 6.7% to 2,700 during this downtrend.Since the bull market started more than 10 years ago, the S&P 500 had at least three other fallow periods of comparable length. The index tread water between April 2010 and December 2011 amid the first U.S. credit-rating downgrade. It stayed unchanged between April 2011 and November 2012. Then there was the September 2014 to June 2016 period, when concern from slowing global growth to a shock yuan devaluation to Brexit chained the index to the same level for 648 days.Of those three predecessors, itâs the last one that the current stretch most resembles, given the state of profit growth then and now. Thatâs reason for optimism, says Mislav Matejka, JPMorgan Chase & Co.âs global equity strategist. Back then, an earnings recession gave way to a fresh rally. While stocks could easily drift lower over the next few weeks, according to Matejka, thatâs probably about as bad as it will get. Positioning remains relatively light, economic fundamentals are still solid and stock valuations are cooling off relative to their July highs.âThe current macro setup has more similarities to â15 - â16 mid-cycle correction episode rather than the end of the cycle,â Matejka said in a note to clients. âWe believe believe that growth trends will firm up as we move in the second half of the year.âTo contact the reporter on this story: Elena Popina in New York at email@example.comTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Jeremy Herron at firstname.lastname@example.org, Chris NagiFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

Dow ends nearly 400 points lower as falling Treasury yields underline economic jitters
Stocks fell sharply Monday, appearing to take a cue from a slump in Treasury yields that reflected mounting worries about the economic outlook and geopolitical concerns. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended around 391 points lower, down 1.5%, near 25,896, according to preliminary figures while the S&P 500 slumped around 36 points, or 1.2%, to close around 2,882. The Nasdaq Composite dropped around 96 points to end near 7,863, a loss of 1.2%. The yield on the 10-year Treasury slumped around 9 basis points to 1.644%, its lowest since October 2016. The slump in yields, which can cut into lending margins, sent financial stocks skidding, with Bank of America Corp. down 2.5% and Dow component Goldman Sachs Group Inc. falling 2.7%. All 11 S&P 500 sectors ended lower, with financials leading the way, down 1.9%.

REFILE-US STOCKS-Wall Street slides on geopolitical, recession fears
U.S. stocks dipped in a broad sell-off on Monday as rising geopolitical tensions spooked investors away from equities and the extended U.S.-China trade war stoked fears of impending global recession. All three major U.S. stock indexes started the week in the red, with few earnings reports and no economic data to soothe market jitters over protests in Hong Kong, the rejection of Argentine President Mauricio Macri's economic agenda in primary elections, and a tariff dispute that has beleaguered markets for months. Goldman Sachs Group Inc said on Sunday that its economists see recessionary risks increasing as the trade war between the world's two largest economies drags on, and no longer expect a resolution before the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
